Subhash Chandra chairs media giant Essel Group, which also has interests in amusement parks, packaging, infrastructure and lotteries.

Broadcaster Zee Entertainment Enterprises, run by Chandra's sons Punit and Amit, has 76 channels reaching 1.3 billion viewers in 173 countries.

Chandra has entered the cruise business under the brand Jalesh, which means "God of the water."

Weighed down by debt in his infrastructure business, Chandra said in November 2018, that he was looking to sell part of his stake in flagship Zee.

In January 2019, shares of his companies took a hit on an allegation that Essel was linked to a company under investigation for fraud. Essel denied the allegation.
