Pyotr Aven is a co-owner of Alfa Bank and LetterOne along with Mikhail Fridman, Khan and fellow billionaires Alexei Kuzmichev and Andrei Kosogov.

Aven and his partners were all sanctioned by the EU and U.K. in February and March 2022; Aven stepped down from LetterOne's board in March.

He grew up in Moscow, graduated from Moscow State University, and worked at the Institute for Systems Studies at the Soviet Academy of Sciences.

In 1989 he went to work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; two years later he was tapped to be Putin's minister of foreign economic relations.

Aven was president of Russia's largest privately held bank, Alfa-Bank, which was hit with sanctions in April 2022, from 1994 to 2011.
