Raised in Rosario, Argentina, Messi moved to Barcelona at age 13 to join the club's youth program and debuted for its senior team four years later in 2004.

After 17 years in Barcelona, Messi spent two years playing for Paris Saint-German and then moved to the U.S. to join Inter Miami in 2023.

Inter Miami offered him the option to acquire an equity stake in the team when he retires as part of a package deal to lure him to Major League Soccer.
