Lee Dong-chae is founder of EcoPro, a chemicals group, which he started in 1998.
EcoPro's battery-materials-making unit, EcoPro BM, is South Korea's largest producer of cathodes used in electric car batteries.
In 2022, a joint venture between EcoPro BM and Samsung's battery arm completed construction of the world's largest cathode material plant by output capacity.
In May 2023, Lee was sentenced to a two-year prison term and fined 2.2 billion won ($1.7 million) for insider trading. He has appealed the court's ruling.
