Francesco Gaetano Caltagirone is the president of Caltagirone, a holding company with interests in construction, cement, real estate, finance and publishing.
His family, which hails from Sicily, was in the construction and real estate business, which he expanded and took into other sectors.
In 1999, after buying several papers, he built media group Caltagirone Editore, Italy's sixth largest newspaper publisher.
The bulk of his wealth is now stakes in two publicly traded firms: insurance company Assicurazioni Generali and cement giant Cementir.
Caltagirone joined the billionaire Del Vecchio family to acquire significant stakes in Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena in 2024 and 2025. In 2025, the bank launch a successful takeover of investment bank Mediobanca.
