In 2012, he led the sale of mineral company Kazzinc to commodities firm Glencore for $1.4 billion in cash and shares, which he sold in 2021.

Utemuratov purchased 88% of Kazakhstan's Forte Bank for $400 million in 2014.

In 2025, the businessman sold The Ritz-Carlton Vienna hotel, the gold mining company RG Gold in Kazakhstan, the Burger King franchise in Kazakhstan, and Sky Mobile LLP in Kyrgyzstan (a mobile operator).

One of his biggest transactions was the 2007 sale of Kazakhstan's ATF Bank to Italian bank UniCredit for a reported $2.2 billion
