He and his former partner Lev Kvetnoi were born in a settlement near Moscow and studied at the same athletics school, Institute of Physical Culture.

The partners merged their business with that of billionaire Alisher Usmanov's. Kvetnoi later sold out; Skoch transferred his holdings to his father.

His father Vladimir now owns 30% of mining and metals giant Metalloinvest through Usmanov's USM Holdings.
