Usmanov headed Gazprom Investholding, a subsidiary of state-run conglomerate Gazprom, from 2000 to 2014.

An ex-fencer, Usmanov has led the International Fencing Federation since 2008; he was re-elected in 2022 and 2024 but voluntarily suspended his duties after the sanctions.
